Let’s Reach Out
“The course has given me a clear idea of where I am in life and what direction I want to take. I have also found out how I can help others to resolve their problems, without telling them the answers (or what to do!)” Normanton Mother
Through JET’s close ties with the Community the needs of disadvantaged Pakistani BME women have become increasingly clear. Supported by the Derbyshire Learning Partnership Local Initiative Development Fund (LIDF), the purpose of this project was to train a group of recognised role models who could act as mentors to help support members of that local community.
It was important that the trainee group of mentors could speak community languages so that local women could be engaged sensitively and encouraged to participate in community activities. Coincidentally JET would provide education and training to develop individual skills, confidence and job aspirations.
Coaching skills also enabled students to have a better understanding with regard to where they were in life themselves and to reflect on their own hopes and ambitions whilst encouraging and advising others.
It was necessary to be extremely flexible in terms of training sessions because of beneficiaries’ family commitments. It soon became clear that participation in this course would encourage attendees to pursue further learning opportunities. Goal setting was crucial as was the development of specific ideas with a clear focus and with rigorous attention to detail.
Ultimately JET wanted to “Reach Out” to the hard to reach. Buoyed by the response to this course JET hopes to develop the project further by training more mentors and thereafter accessing more community members, irrespective of ethnic origin.
