Let’s Encourage
“I feel I have more knowledge and understanding about the ways in which I can support my child through his education” Normanton Parent
This project was sponsored by Derbyshire Learning Partnership under their Local Initiative Development Fund (LIDF). The purpose was to increase parents’ understanding of our education system and thereby create a better awareness of their children’s achievements and aspirations (and be in a better position to support them).
JET, in conjunction with local schools, arranged meetings, seminars and visits to develop a strong partnership with parents. These activities reviewed the management of schools, the role of governing boards and the importance of the participation of a parent governor. They also addressed communication techniques and the crucial importance of attending parent evenings to discuss the specific progress of children.
The number of parents attending exceeded the actual project targets. A parents’ support group has been established to enable the sharing of knowledge and experience, challenges and successes.
We believe that as a result of this work parents will gain in confidence which will in turn impact on their children’s education and personal development. This in turn will help to address levels of underachievement of Pakistani children which remains one of the key objectives within JET’s strategy.
We would like to acknowledge the proactive role of supporting schools. We are also grateful to the multilingual course facilitator who managed the sessions but also who made time for individual and confidential consultation. Finally we would like to thank our service users, whom we are here to serve.
