Leap Forward
JET has received funding from Connexions and Pathfinder to engage twelve pupils of Pakistani heritage at Derby Moor Community School and Bemrose Community School. These pupils are in year 10 and are identified as being at risk of falling into the NEET group. Derby Moor and Bemrose School identified the pupils and JET provides supplementary support for them during the holiday period.
We ensure gender specific sessions and where appropriate ensure that religious and cultural norms are met. Class sizes are restrained at six and the supplementary support is offered in English, Maths and Science.
Each of the additional sessions are complemented with experiential learning sessions that support young people to develop communication, confidence building, and team working skills. Trips are organised with students to participate in canoeing, abseiling, weaselling and other outdoor events.
We see confidence building in teamwork events as a crucial element in this programme. These will be locked into the programme in part for individual development but also to act as an incentive for consistent participation. In all cases individuals will be assigned to mentors who are CRB checked and individually trained.
No single JET project, should in our view, be at an end. Every project is part of a continuous process of ongoing self improvement.
