DAF Mentoring

03 December 2007

The mentoring project has been set up by Jobs Education & Training under the Deprived Area Fund (DAF) in partnership with Jobcentre Plus.  The project will allow local people to take up the role of ‘mentor’ and to support individuals to overcome barriers which face them in their search for employment.

The aims of the project are to:

•     Provide a friendly and supportive mentoring relationship aimed at offering one to one advice in order to improve employability prospects and to widen career options

•    Target service user groups (who are not working or in training or education) who reside in the Normanton, Arboretum and Sinfin wards

The project will cover certain key areas in the development of individuals. These areas are:-

•    Motivation, Confidence and Self-esteem
•    Communication and Social Skills
•    Personal Expectations and Individuality
•    Social Responsibility and Awareness
•    Employability Prospects and Career Options

The project offers numerous benefits for mentors taking part in the programme:-

•    Personal Development
•    Key Skills - Communication, Problem Solving and Action Planning
•    Feeling valued and having a new role
•    Opening up new opportunities
•    Developing specialist area of support

Mentees will be matched with appropriate mentors to help them achieve their goals.  Mentors and mentees will be expected to meet on a regular basis.  The project runs from December 2007 to March 2008.
