JET’s Mission statement is clear and it is to “facilitate Jobs, Education and Training in the Community at large”. JET was formed in 2002 to address issues of social deprivation within Normanton (two of the wards within which are in the bottom 10% of the most deprived wards within the United Kingdom).

Initially JET focused on low level educational achievement amongst BME children, particularly Pakistani and Bangladeshi, within Derby. A disproportionate number of these children opt out of the system. Job expectations, if any, are at the very low bottom of the range of work opportunities. Families from minority ethnic communities are not always supportive of children or change and parents and grandparents often lack self-confidence and self-esteem.

The needs of the Community are varied. Some, particularly new arrivees from countries such as Poland, Slovakia, and Afghanistan, need basic skills training including ESOL. Some secondary school children need supplementary learning in subjects such as English, Maths and Science. Women, often restricted in the home, join us for courses such as Sewing and Healthy Eating. There is so much more. Many service users of all ages and both sexes want accredited skills as they pursue employment. The reality is that in the area which we serve unemployment rates are 86.5% higher than the Derby City Average. That is why all our Training Programmes are geared towards ultimate employment or self-employment.
